Dr. Le-Kumar received her undergraduate degree at the University of California, Berkeley and medical degree from St. George’s School of Medicine in 2018. She completed her internship and residency training at Northwell Health in New York in 2021 and then completed her fellowship in hematology and oncology at the University of Minnesota in June 2024.
When asked about her first introduction to cancer, Dr. Thuy Le-Kumar shares this memory:
“I was 13, and the movie ‘A Walk to Remember’ featured a 17-year-old female protagonist who was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away from it.” Fascinated with the science behind cancer, she began to think about a career in oncology.
While she was in medical school, a family member was diagnosed with cancer.
“Going to the oncology appointments and meeting with the surgeon and radiation oncologist brought perspective to the need for multidisciplinary aspects of medicine when caring for a patient,” she relates. “I saw the special relationship that developed with the oncologist, the patient, and their family members.”
Oncology has all the aspects that inspired her to go into medicine: evolving science, multidisciplinary teamwork, and most importantly, fostering relationships with patients.
Dr. Le-Kumar and her husband, Dr. Vikas Le-Kumar, are both from California and met in medical school. Dr. Vikas Le-Kumar will join Dothan Hematology + Oncology in July 2025. The Le-Kumars have two children. She enjoys diamond painting, traveling, hiking, knitting, crocheting, and reading in her spare time.
The Le-Kumars immediately fell in love with the kindness and southern hospitality of the Wiregrass community, and are thankful to now call it home sweet home.
